    CAPREIT is looking to hire three CPA Students in the accounting department, the finance department, and the internal audit group.

     

    The accounting team plays an instrumental role at CAPREIT in providing stakeholders with accurate and timely information on CAPREIT’s operational results on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. In the accounting department, you will support the accounting, financial analysis and preparation of monthly variance analysis along with other responsibilities. This position will be reporting to the Head Office Controller and will working closely with senior management on financial reporting and other accounting matters. 

     

    In the corporate finance department (comprised of financial reporting and finance), you will play a key role to support cash management, accounting, reporting and financial analysis along with other responsibilities. This position will be reporting to the Finance Manager with the opportunity to work closely with senior management on finance and financial reporting related matters.

     

    The internal audit team provides independent and objective assurance and advisory services in relation to processes and controls which are in place to assist the business in meeting its objectives. As a member of the Internal Audit team, you will support the NI 52-109 compliance process, which entails evaluating the operating effectiveness of key business, financial and information technology controls impacting external financial reporting. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to conduct operational site audits at our various properties across Canada. As we develop the internal audit plan further, you will assist in conducting internal audit engagements with a focus on key strategic business processes.

     

    Primary Responsibilities:

     

    Accounting (Financial Reporting and Management Accounting competencies)

    • Work directly with other team members in the month-end close process which includes GL account analysis, budget versus actual analysis, and reconciliations
    • Assist in the preparation of monthly bank and intercompany reconciliations for CAPREIT’s international subsidiaries
    • Preparation of certain schedules that are included in the Management’s Discussion and Analysis and Financial Statements on a quarterly and annual basis
    • Conduct research on new and amended IFRS accounting policies and assess the impact to the financial statements
    • Liaison with the external auditors to address their needs for the quarterly reviews and annual year end audits
    • Prepare journal entries and reconciliations for review
    • Proactively contribute to corporate reporting process improvements

     

    Internal Audit (Assurance competencies)

    • Gaining an understanding of the internal audit function’s risk assessment processes and how they impact the focus of internal audit’s plan
    • Interacting with management in all areas of the business as it relates to processes and internal controls
    • Assisting in the evaluation of the design and operating effectiveness of key business, financial and information technology controls surrounding financial reporting in order to support NI 52-109/Bill 198 compliance
    • Executing audit procedures under the site audit process at various properties across the country (some travel required)
    • Assisting in carrying out risk based audit projects identified in the Internal Audit Plan in strategic areas of the business, under the direction of the Manager or Director, Internal Audit.
    • Identifying opportunities for improvements in business processes and more efficient audit practices
    • Providing assistance, where required, with special reviews requested by the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees or management

     

    Finance and Treasury (Financial Reporting and Management Accounting competencies)

    • Prepare internal cash flow projections and forecast liquidity needs
    • Support the planning and execution of debt strategy including budgeting and forecasting
    • Support compilation and analysis of monthly reporting package
    • Prepare journal entries and reconciliations for review
    • Assist in compliance and regulatory reporting on a quarterly and annual basis
    • Create and coordinate payment and funding processing (manual payments, advances)
    • Support day-to-day banking needs
    • Liaise with external auditors to address their needs for the quarterly reviews and annual year end audits
    • Proactively contribute to corporate reporting and financing process

     

    Special Projects

    • Assist in special projects assigned by management

     

    Qualifications:         

    • Satisfy Approved Training Office Program Requirements
      • Actively pursuing CPA designation
      • In the process of completing university undergraduate degree in business
    • Strong time management, multi-tasking and organization skills
    • Project management skills
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Advanced knowledge of MS-Excel functionality
    • Overtime may be required during busy periods
