Title: Senior Legal Counsel (*1 Year Contract*) 

 

Reports to: SVP, Legal and Corporate Secretary  

 

Position Summary: The Senior Legal Counsel has responsibility for assisting the Legal Department in matters relating to corporate, commercial, securities, and real estate transactions and compliance with applicable laws.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice to CAPREIT and its affiliates
  • Assist the SVP, Legal with the overall management of the legal function and legal affairs of CAPREIT and its affiliates
  • Work with the Investment Department and the Chief Investment Officer to negotiate, manage, and close real estate transactions
  • Review and draft contracts to support the operations and corporate services departments
  • Draft and review continuous disclosure documents as required by applicable securities laws  
  • Assist with managing litigation claims
  • Work with the Risk and Compliance Department to identify areas of risk and ensure reasonable risk management of business dealings
  • Work with corporate service departments to standardize contracts and letters of engagement and respond to queries on an ad hoc basis
  • Work with operations teams to draft template notices, releases, and other standard documents and respond to queries on an ad hoc basis
  • Advise on enterprise-wide projects
  • Assist in preparing reports and memorandums to the Board of Trustees on legal matters
  • Work with external counsel as required
  • Other duties as may be required

 

Skills & Requirements:

  • Law degree from a recognized Canadian law school
  • At least 5 years experience post-call at a law firm with knowledge of corporate, commercial, securities and mergers and acquisitions.  Exposure to real estate will be a strong asset.
  • Must be able to identify issues, keep abreast of legislative changes and legal developments and maintain good connections with key external counsel and firms
  • High level of organization
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

 

Qualifications:

  • Licensed lawyer, Ontario bar, with 5+ years of experience post-call
  • Strong, adaptable and flexible team player
  • Ability to speak French is an asset

 

Compensation & Work Arrangement:

  • Competitive Base Salary between $150,000 - $200,000.
  • Hybrid Work Model: Minimum 4 days a week in the office (Monday to Thursday).
