Title: Manager, Corporate Accounting

 

Reports To: Senior Manager, Finance and Accounting

 

Position Summary: The Manager, Corporate Accounting is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the accounting records of CAPREIT's Corporate Accounting division which includes general accounting, budgeting and forecasting. The position will work closely with and lead the members of his/her team as well as other various stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the accounting records relating to capital expenditure, development, and other corporate functions. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

Capital Expenditure and Development

  • Oversee and monitor that the capital expenditure accounting policy has been applied consistently and accurately across the regions
  • Manage the month-end process to ensure capital expenditure related jobs are complete and accurate while supporting regional controllers and analysts on month-end close process as required
  • Lead the implementation of development accounting within CAPREIT’s SAP or Yardi system
  • Track spend on development projects and track them accurately against budget while providing insight to the development group on cost overruns / percentage of completion
  • Assist with queries relating to capital expenditure and development
  • Ensure the data and information in the fixed asset module and general ledger systems in the SAP are accurate, complete and reliable
  • Review the budgets and forecasts of capital expenditure prepared by the regions to ensure assumptions are supportable
  • Prepare MD&A schedules relating to current capital expenditure spend and forward projections (i.e. forecasts)
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and yearly schedules for the financial reporting team
  • Update CAPEX and Development Accounting Policies

 

Head Office Support

  • Lead and prepare monthly G&A variance analysis, budgets and forecasts for corporate departments. Work closely with corporate department VP/Directors to engage and support in business strategy and financial analysis.
  • Lead the monthly account analysis for corporate balance sheet accounts
  • Research new IFRS / RealPAC accounting policies and principles that will affect the accounting department
  • Assist in the documentation & implementation of accounting policies and principles which may affect the SAP system or others
  • Train accounting teams on any new accounting procedure or policy change
  • Conduct regular meetings to promote two-way communication of best practices in business and system processes
  • Provide support to the head office team relating to month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close
  • Assist in the implementation of new accounting systems / processes
  • Liaise with the auditors and their requirements

 

Special Projects

  • Continuous review of business processes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness
  • Ad hoc tasks as requested by senior management

 

Qualifications

  • CPA designation or close to completion
  • 3-5 years relevant accounting experience
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Excellent knowledge of IFRS applicable to area of responsibility
  • Effective organization and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Excel is a requirement
  • Proficiency in the SAP and/or Yardi system would be an asset
