Title: Legal Student Intern (Summer Internship Role) 

Reports To: Senior Legal Counsel

  

Position Summary: The Legal Student will be responsible for assisting the Senior Legal Counsel in matters relating to corporate, commercial, securities, and real estate transactions and compliance with applicable laws.

 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Senior Legal Counsel with the overall management of the legal function and legal affairs of CAPREIT and its affiliates
  • Respond to a variety of legal requests from internal clients, communicating legal concepts to the business in a manner that is easy to understand
  • Work with the Senior Legal Counsel to support the Investment Department and the Chief Investment Officer to negotiate, manage, and close real estate transactions
  • Provide support to the Senior Legal Counsel as needed to review and draft contracts to support the operations and corporate services departments
  • Work with corporate service departments to standardize contracts and letters of engagement and respond to queries on an ad hoc basis with the guidance of Senior Legal Counsel
  • Provide support with drafting template notices, releases, and other standard documents and responding to queries on an ad hoc basis for the operations teams
  • Assist with drafting and review of commercial agreements, including professional services, marketing partnerships, and business and technology agreements
  • Conduct legal research as needed and prepare memoranda
  • Provide corporate secretarial assistance, as required (i.e. assist in preparing board materials, coordinating regulatory filings etc.)
  • Other duties as may be required

 

 

Skills & Requirements:

  • Enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year of law school
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills- must be able to write clearly and concisely
  • The ability to speak French and or Dutch would be an asset
  • Have working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Proven ability to multi-task, work well under pressure and able to adjust to changing needs of the department
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and multiple priorities effectively and with conflicting deadlines
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and creative thinking skills
  • Client-service oriented, including strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
